Spring cleaning
Spring is here and it’s time to start planning for a spring cleaning weekend in your apartment. I say plan, because tackling each room is going to take some time, as each one will require its own blueprint to accomplish. A great place to start is the kitchen. Here’s a guide to help you begin – good luck and happy cleaning!
Cupboards:
The interior and exterior of your cupboards may not appear dirty, but they are. If your spices tip over, or the cooking oil spray tends to leak out of the nozzle, you will likely notice remnants and oil streaks on the walls and in corners.
Interior: Combine water and vinegar into a bowl. Using a dry sponge, simply wipe the walls, shelves, and drawers. To get the corners and edges, use a toothbrush. Allow everything to dry thoroughly before placing any items back in. You may also want to add a shelf liner to the bottom of your cupboard shelves to keep them clean in the future.
Exterior: The exteriors will likely need a good clean, especially when hands have been on them. A gentle cloth and a simple water-vinegar solution is all you need. Don’t excessively wet the cloth, and be sure when it’s time to rinse, that you do so with a clean cloth and clean water.
Countertops:
Half water and half vinegar is your go-to green solution for cleaning your kitchen countertops. But because of its off-putting smell, infuse your cleaner with a natural extract like citrus peels, lavender, or rosemary. With a spray bottle, spritz the counter and wipe clean with a non-abrasive damp sponge and let dry. Your counters will be fully sanitized – and your kitchen will be smelling great!
Cutting Board:
Start by scrubbing your block with hot, soapy water and a soft sponge using tight circle motions. Next, spray it down with a vinegar-water solution to sanitize. While letting the solution sit, combine ¼ cup of salt and some lemon juice to form a paste. Work the paste into the block with the scrub sponge – this will help deodorize it. Rinse well in the sink and let dry. Dip your sponge into the mineral oil and evenly coat your block. Continue feeding it oil until the block stops absorbing it. Remove excess with a clean microfiber cloth.
